LinkedIn uses 65GB of RAM with 7 tabs opened

https://ibb.co/605p8bP3

A couple of months ago my machine became totally unusable and wasn't understanding why, however after a quick check I discovered the ram was full and the swap as well.

After discovering that chrome ate more than half of my ram I checked out the ram consumption on chrome and I was shocked 65GB it's just insane.

(ram bought a couple of years ago)

I noticed chatGPT using 1.4GB in a single chat the other day and affecting performance. Don't get me wrong it was a long one, but it's all text, so I still don't think I understand why it uses so much memory. A novel should only take up a few MBs of memory. I assume it's a ton of backend context, but feel like someone should look into that. No wonder all the robots are greedy for memory.

ChatGPT makes sense though. They shouldn't be dumping the whole chat into memory the entire time. They're compressing it in some way. If they do it on device, it saves the cost of doing it on the cloud. ChatGPT's memory feature is a good leap ahead of the competition and it could be due to things like this, which may query memories of conversations made long ago and not just the recent ones.

Tools like Cursor do something very similar. They claim to be using 2 million tokens or something, but those are cheap tokens which make the code space more searchable.

Before I deleted my account in November, I have reported to them a very severe form of memory leak that was caused by ad blocker(s).

When you disabled your ad blocker, things became normal...but the background services they run via websockets was just insane lol.

As soon as you re-enabled your ad blocker, the same original memory usage returned.

Another memory leakage can be found via their message app; the more characters you type after a while, the more memory it would devour! I just couldn't continue my discussion with an HR during discussion about arranging an interview; we had to switch to email as it led both of us to extreme frustration!

It just not worth the effort anymore...not to mention the HR scammers that compete between them who's going to get your info or what other data they can extract from you.

Just delete your account; it's not worth it anymore...whatever Microsoft touches, it kills it in no time.

Three days ago someone posted - LinkedIn uses 2.4 GB RAM across two tabs

    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47561489

What next, a new post with the RAM value when 12 tabs are open?

Well if you check the screenshot you will notice that LinkedIn was using about 10x more memory for a few tabs ;) The most insane one is at +15GB lol

I felt "reductive" reading that LinkedIn was using <3GB for 2 tabs given my experience.

I posted because I saw that a few days ago but 2.4GB felt "reductive" considering what I experienced on my machine ;)

All this engineering and they still have these basic sub-optimal memory leaks with just a few tabs.

Makes me wonder that they don't even do performance tests at all.
